It turns out that the first week of August is National Simplify Your Life Week. I don’t know if it’s the caffeine talking or the beginning of the month rush I get, but I’ve decided to give a Capsule Wardrobe a try. If there’s anything in my life that needs to be simplified, it’s that. What’s even more impressive is that I’m trying to talk mi esposo into doing this as well. If you know him you know that this is a monumental challenge. But I’m no quitter! Besides, if I have to suffer, I may as well have company. How does one simplify ones wardrobe?
Here’s the premise: pare your wardrobe down to a finite number of items (the linked article suggests 30-40- we are super chicken so we went with 40). The good news is that number doesn’t count PJs, special occasion stuff (like I have a ton of that hanging around lol), accessories or ‘fitness apparel” aka yoga pants. So you’re comfy clothes don’t have to get axed from the rotation, you just have to be very selective about the work/casual pieces.
I’m going to select my pieces based on an August-October time frame in Central Texas (in other words, there will be a lot of warm weather items). The rest of the clothes that don’t make the cut will be stored until November 1st (*sobs*). In this time frame, my plan is to not buy anything new. Holy. Moly. The only caveat to this statement is if I don’t have an essential piece for the capsule I’ll order it within the next week. Deal?
The key is in finding pieces that work well together and that can be layered. And I’m going to try to stay in a certain color matched ‘zone’ so that all the items can be worn with each other. I’m thinking the neutrals (black, gray, white, taupe) with yellow and coral.
So I’m off to dig through my closet and make my selections. Wish me luck and if I don’t post again in the next few days, send in search and rescue!
